The fire disaster of 1958
Then came the greatest catastrophe for the Holy Sepulcher Chapel after secularisation: in the night of March 25th/26th, 1958 the chapel was almost completely destroyed by fire. At that time, the baroque interior was almost completely lost. Only the altarpiece of the high altar by J. Zwick miraculously remained largely intact. The figures of the side altars were completely preserved. They have been kept in the chapter building to this day. At first they thought of arson. However, it turned out that the fire was caused by children lighting the fire.

The existing building of the Holy Sepulcher Chapel was built in 1628 in place of a medieval chapel by Hans Bonalino under Prince Bishop Johann Georg II Fuchs von Dornheim. His coat of arms can be seen on a sandstone slab on the west portal, surrounded by ear cups.
