With one interruption, graphite (Hauzenberger Graphite) has been mined in Kropfmühl since 1870. Funding was discontinued in 2005. However, the mine was kept in such a condition that, according to the operator, graphite mining could be resumed within six months if the world market price rises to such an extent that operation is economical again
In the summer of 2012, graphite mining was resumed after seven years. In 2008, Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V. (Amsterdam) acquired the majority of what was then Graphit Kropfmühl AG. In 2012 the company was completely taken over.
