Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square, better known as Terreiro do Paço), was the land where the Royal Palace of Lisbon sat for more than 200 years. It is one of the most important squares in Lisbon and, with a great view of the Tagus estuary, it is the nerve center of the city.

The square is located on the banks of the Tagus River, in the former Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square), where the royal court used to be located in the 16th century. After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Marquis of Pombal ordered its reconstruction in a U-shape, with three large arcaded buildings housing government agencies, Lisbon's main tourist office, and a few restaurants and cafés, such as Martinho da Arcada, the oldest in the city.
