They served as the ferryman's home and residence. The rope of the Ponten ferry (Latin: pons = bridge, dam / ponto = ferry, transport ship) was also anchored to them. These ferry towers bear witness to a Ponten ferry service from 1829 to 1908/09, the year the first Trittenheim Moselle bridge was completed.

A small documentation of Trittenheim and its neighboring towns has been created in the lower room of the tower, and the upper floor will serve as a meeting place for the "Trittenheim young winemakers" and a rest area for hikers.
