Surbourg is a commune with 1667 inhabitants in the department of Bas-Rhin in the region of Grand Est in France. Surbourg has a stake in the former Holy Forest and today Haguenauer Forest. In its area, on Surbourger communal grounds, stands the oldest monastery in the Alsace region; it was founded in the 6th century by Arbogast of Strasbourg. The Romanesque church of the later Benedictine monastery has been preserved and today serves as a parish church. It is dedicated to John the Baptist, which is also depicted on the municipal coat of arms.

The village developed initially around the tradition according to the Arbogast going back monastery monastery. In addition to the extended in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and converted collegiate church in Surbourg still reminiscent of a 17th-century oratoire (in the Rue du Docteur-German) to the Bishop of Strasbourg.
