    The abbey was founded in 1007 by the Count of Mantua Tedaldo di Canossa (Matilde's paternal grandfather), who dedicated it to himself and to his late wife Willa, [2] through a donation to the Benedictine monks of half of the land that was between the Po and Lirone rivers, an important site for ensuring the control of river navigation. We have few traces of the previous Roman settlement.
