It is a narrow gauge railway bridge that belonged to the Madrid-Almorox line (first section from Madrid-Paseo de Extremadura Station to Navalcarnero) with a stop near the bridge at the Colonia Guadarrama halt.
In 2011 the roof was remodeled, covering the gaps in the sleepers with a wooden entablature, being its exclusive use for cyclists and pedestrians within the Vía Verde del Guadarrama.

What is the historical significance of the Iron Bridge Over the Guadarrama?

The Iron Bridge is a historic narrow-gauge railway bridge from the 19th century, originally part of the Madrid-Almorox line. This line was crucial for transporting goods and passengers, especially vegetables from Toledo to Madrid, and was a popular route for Madrileños seeking recreation by the Guadarrama and Alberche rivers in the 1950s and 60s. Train service ceased in 1970, and the bridge was repurposed in 2011 for pedestrian and cyclist use.

Are there specific popular trails or routes that incorporate the Iron Bridge?

Yes, the Iron Bridge is a central feature of the Vía Verde del Guadarrama (Guadarrama River Greenway). This greenway offers a serene path for cyclists and pedestrians, allowing you to travel from Móstoles through cereal fields to the regional park of the middle course of the Guadarrama River. Many routes in the area are designed around this greenway, offering various lengths and experiences.

What is the typical terrain and difficulty level of trails around the Iron Bridge?

The trails directly on the Vía Verde del Guadarrama, including the bridge itself, are generally flat and well-maintained. The bridge's original sleepers were covered with a wooden entablature during its 2011 remodel, ensuring a smooth surface. This makes the greenway suitable for various fitness levels, including families and casual walkers or cyclists. While the immediate area is easy, some connecting trails in the wider regional park might offer slightly more varied terrain.

Are there any specific viewpoints or landmarks near the Iron Bridge worth visiting?

Beyond the historical bridge itself, the main attraction is the natural landscape of the Guadarrama River and the surrounding cereal fields. The bridge offers excellent vantage points to contemplate the widening course of the river. The wider Sierra de Guadarrama region, where the river originates, is a protected natural environment with high biodiversity, offering numerous scenic spots and opportunities for nature observation.

Is parking available near the Iron Bridge Over the Guadarrama?

While specific parking directly at the bridge might be limited, access points to the Vía Verde del Guadarrama, particularly near municipalities like Móstoles, typically offer parking facilities. It's advisable to check local parking options in Móstoles or other nearby towns from where you plan to access the greenway.

Can I reach the Iron Bridge using public transport?

Public transport options can connect you to nearby towns such as Móstoles, from which the Vía Verde del Guadarrama can be accessed. From these towns, you would typically walk or cycle along the greenway to reach the bridge. Checking local bus or train schedules to Móstoles or other adjacent communities is recommended for planning your journey.

Are there any permits required for hiking or cycling around the Iron Bridge?

However, if you plan to venture into specific protected areas or engage in activities like wild camping in the broader Sierra de Guadarrama, it's always wise to check for any local regulations or restrictions.

Is the Iron Bridge Over the Guadarrama suitable for a winter hike?

While the bridge and greenway are accessible year-round, winter conditions can vary. The milder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered the best time to visit due to pleasant weather and picturesque landscapes. In winter, temperatures can drop, and while snow is less common at the bridge's elevation, it's possible in the higher Sierra de Guadarrama. Always check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for cold and potentially damp conditions if visiting in winter.

Are the trails around the Iron Bridge family-friendly?

Absolutely! The Vía Verde del Guadarrama, with its generally flat and well-maintained surface, is ideal for families. Please ensure your dog is kept on a leash and that you clean up after them to maintain the cleanliness and enjoyment of the greenway for all users.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near the Iron Bridge Over the Guadarrama?

It's best to plan for refreshments and facilities before or after your visit to the bridge itself.

How long does it typically take to walk or cycle across the Iron Bridge and its immediate surroundings?

Crossing the Iron Bridge itself takes only a few minutes. However, as it's part of the longer Vía Verde del Guadarrama, the duration of your walk or cycle depends on how much of the greenway you wish to explore. A leisurely stroll around the immediate area might take 30-60 minutes, while cycling the full greenway from Móstoles could take several hours, depending on your pace and the distance covered.
