The present St. Michael's Church was built in 1992, after the sandstone predecessor at the mountain blow 1989 was so badly damaged that only a demolition was in question.

This Völkershausen church was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

To the right of the Michaeliskirche Völkershausen is the memorial site for March 13, 1989. On this day, the most powerful rock burst to date caused by mining occurred. In the Merkers potash mine, a planned explosion at a depth of around 850 m caused a large-scale collapse of a mining area and an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 in the area. The quake was felt up to 300 km away. Almost 80% of the houses were damaged. The castle, church, rectory and other private houses had to be demolished. A small, free permanent exhibition commemorates this catastrophic event.
