Luís de Camões is considered Portugal's most important poet. His epic poem "The Lusiads" is an example of the highest poetry of the Renaissance. It is no wonder, then, that the Portuguese revere this man, and even his death day, June 10th, has been declared a national holiday. It is not even known today whether he died in 1579 or 1580. But this does not diminish his legacy.
