The gate tower in Laaber was part of the medieval fortifications and served as access to Laaber Castle. The castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Laaber to control important traffic routes in the Laber Valley. The gate tower separated the market area from the stately castle hill and was a central element of the fortifications. Craftsmen lived and worked in its surroundings. Today, the remains of the tower and the castle have been preserved and are listed as monuments as evidence of the town's medieval history.
