You are standing in front of an fortification wall of the ancient Hittite capital Ḫattuša. The remarkable Sphinx Gate is the southernmost gate of the city. Among the five known gateways in the outer wall of the city, it has a special function, as it was used not only as the entrance to the city, but also for cultic purposes.
