Complesso monumentale The Girifalco madhouse, known as the Complesso monumentale, was built as the third insane asylum in the south after that of Palermo and Aversa to convert people declared insane.
Until the time of its closure, the institution housed numerous patients suffering from various diseases, from many parts of Italy and even abroad. The repressive effects of everyday life in the institution often inspired the inmates to be creative and artistic. So today there are numerous poems or paintings as a direct expression of the everyday life suffered.

Born first as a convent it then became, in the 19th century, a mental asylum. Today it is used with various functions, including those of SRP (psychiatric residential facilities) and RSA (health care residence).
