In memory of Emil Christian Hansen, the statue ”Gærpigen” (”The Heast Girl”) was erected on Dagmarsgade by the sculptor Anders Jensen Bundgaard (1864-1937).
Emil Christian Hansen (1842-1909) is one of the most influential people in Ribe. Yet there are many who do not know his name. On the other hand, everyone knows what he was doing: brewer's yeast.
Emil Christian Hansen was involved in the revolutionary discoveries related to the fermentation of beer, and thanks to him it has been possible to brew more stable and better quality beer for many generations.
