Since the Upper Harz for the cultivation of grain is unsuitable, but previously needed a lot of manpower for mining in the mountains, the food supply of the population of the Upper Harz had to be secured by appropriate storage and transport facilities. For this reason, the Osteroder Harzkornmagazin was built between 1719 and 1722. Since 1989, the baroque functional building has been used as a town hall.

The current town hall of the city Osterode is located in the "Harzkornmagazin". A building as a store and to secure the food was necessary because many people were employed in the mining industry, but the resin is only partially suitable for the cultivation of grain. So grain had to be procured externally and also stored - in the Harzkorn magazine.
