As part of the "Art in Public Space" project of the Lower Saxony Foundation under the direction of Dr. Lothar Romain, which Peter Ruthenberg realized between 1990 and 1994, this playful bus shelter was created by Alessandro Mendini.
When it was built, there was still a tram stop here in the middle of the street. This has since been relocated and the "little houses" have been moved to the side of the road where they now provide shelter for bus passengers. The original station had a checkerboard pattern tile floor, which complemented the buildings very well.

The Checkerboard Pavilion was created as part of the broader 'Art in Public Space' project, initiated by the Lower Saxony Foundation and directed by Dr. Lothar Romain. Is the Checkerboard Pavilion the only artistically designed bus stop in Hanover?
