From bishop's court to theatre.
The old Court of Cambrai of Bishop John VI of Burgundy was renovated in 1480 by order of Margaret of York. This residential palace was also called the 'Emperor's Court' because Emperor Charles V grew up here. From the 17th century, this complex of buildings became a Jesuit monastery. In the 19th century this building was used as a theater.
Attention to the facade (right above the entrance) is still Margareta's diamond-shaped coat of arms.

Across the street from the Palace of Margaret of Austria you can see a last vestige of the Palace of Margaret of York. The building was originally the residence of the Bishop of Cambrai when he is in Mechelen. Margareta chooses the enormous Hof van Kamerijk as a widow's estate. It is also called Keizerhof, because Emperor Charles V resided here from 1500 to 1515. Just above the small door in the tower is her diamond-shaped coat of arms, next to that of her husband, Charles the Bold. The former reception hall of the palace is now the municipal theatre.
