Kagbeni, located at 2,800 meters above sea level, is one of the most important centers in the entire Annapurna circuit. The history of Kagbeni dates back to the Middle Ages and it is still possible to admire the historic temples. From Kagbeni it is possible to access the remote area of Upper Mustang.

Kagbeni is located in the Thakkhola (Upper Kali Gandaki) Valley at an altitude of 2.804 metres at the confluence of the tributary Jhong Khola coming from Muktinath. Kagbeni is the only gateway to upper Mustang and is known as one of the oldest villages in the Himalayas.

Kagbeni is located southwest in the Mustang area. Here the valley of the Kali Gandaki River opens up to the Mustang area to China and on the other side to Jomsom.
