It was Louis XIV himself who ordered the construction of this gigantic cistern in 1691, with a capacity of 1800 cubic meters. It was originally used to collect rainwater at the bottom of the roof of Notre-Dame Church, to meet the minimum needs of the population and garrison during terrible periods of drought. It was in service until the mid-19th century, but the city acquired it in 1926 to clear the view of the church's portal. Fortunately it was saved by the protests of the associations.
