    Vandring

From the once mighty castle today only a few remains of the wall and the renovated keep are preserved. The castle association Thanstein, which takes care of the preservation of the castle, also runs a rustic Burgschänke directly at the castle tower.

Beautiful castle ruins in the village of Tahnstein. The stairs in the tower are very steep, the entrance can be opened with an age verification (ID, driver's license).

Burgruine Thanstein is a hub for hikers, situated directly on the long-distance Burgenweg (Castle Trail) and the Goldstein-Wanderweg. You'll find a variety of paths, from leisurely strolls around the village to more challenging routes through the Upper Palatinate Forest. There are also shorter, family-friendly walks directly from the village.

How long does it typically take to explore Burgruine Thanstein and its immediate surroundings?

A visit to the castle ruins themselves, including climbing the keep for the panoramic views, can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. If you plan to combine your visit with a short hike on one of the nearby trails, allow for 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the chosen route and your pace. Longer excursions on the Burgenweg or Goldstein-Wanderweg could easily fill half a day or more.

Is Burgruine Thanstein suitable for families with children?

Yes, Burgruine Thanstein can be a great destination for families. The historical aspect and the climb up the keep can be exciting for children. There are also family-friendly walking routes in the immediate vicinity. However, be aware that the stairs inside the keep are quite steep, so younger children may need assistance. The castle grounds are freely accessible, offering space for exploration.

Are dogs allowed at Burgruine Thanstein and on nearby trails?

Generally, dogs are welcome on the castle grounds and on the surrounding hiking trails, provided they are kept on a leash. This allows your canine companion to enjoy the outdoor adventure with you. Please ensure you clean up after your pet to maintain the beauty of the area for all visitors.

What are the options for public transport to Burgruine Thanstein?

Burgruine Thanstein is located in the rural village of Thanstein, making public transport options somewhat limited. While there might be local bus services connecting to larger towns like Neunburg vorm Wald, these are often infrequent. For most visitors, arriving by car is the most convenient option. If you plan to use public transport, it's advisable to check local bus schedules well in advance.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near Burgruine Thanstein?

Directly at the castle tower, the castle association Thanstein runs a rustic Burgschänke, which is a great spot for refreshments. For more extensive dining options or accommodation, you would typically need to venture into the village of Thanstein itself or nearby larger towns like Neunburg vorm Wald, which offer a wider selection of restaurants and guesthouses.

Is it possible to visit Burgruine Thanstein during winter, and what should I expect?

The castle grounds are freely accessible year-round, so you can visit Burgruine Thanstein in winter. However, access to the keep is typically from March to November. The trails can be icy or snowy, so appropriate winter hiking gear, including sturdy, waterproof boots and warm clothing, is essential. The views can be particularly beautiful with a fresh layer of snow.

What is the history of Burgruine Thanstein?

The history of Burgruine Thanstein dates back to the early 14th century, though some sources suggest construction after 1353 by the Zenger family. It saw various owners and events, including being captured in 1390 and surviving Hussite looting in 1425. The castle was largely destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War in 1633. Although partially repaired, it burned down in 1811 and served as a quarry. Extensive restoration and securing measures, particularly of the keep, have been ongoing since 2011, making it accessible today.

What makes the round keep at Burgruine Thanstein unique?

The round keep (Bergfried) at Burgruine Thanstein is a notable feature, standing 16.5 to 17 meters tall. It's considered relatively rare in the Upper Palatinate region, where square keeps are more common. Its robust construction with 2.5-meter-thick walls and its impressive height make it a striking example of medieval military architecture. The fact that it's accessible and offers panoramic views is a major draw for visitors.

Are there any local events held at Burgruine Thanstein?

Yes, the core castle area occasionally hosts local events. One notable event is the Thanstein Castle Festival, which sometimes takes place in June or July.
