Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Canonica of Santa Maria de Vilabertran is organized around the trapezoidal cloister, around which the monastic quarters and the church were arranged, except for the abbot's residence, which is located outside the canonical core.

In addition to being one of the best preserved examples of medieval canonical architecture in Catalonia, the Canònica de Santa Maria de Vilabertran is a good example of the Augustinian movement of ecclesiastical reform. This movement coincides with the decline of the Benedictine monasteries, and sought to reinforce the ecclesiastical reorganization of the lands reconquered from Islam.
