The community-owned quarries at the lime oven and at the lime hedge were first mentioned in 1277 and only closed in 1920. For centuries they supplied the stones for the construction of today's historic town centre.
The quarry at the Kalkhecke has been a nature reserve since 1970 and is known for its variety of plants.
A third quarry belonged to the Counts of Hanau. The working conditions of the quarrymen were dangerous and difficult, and the social situation was bad.

Extensive forest between Hanau/Rodenbach/Alzenau. Well developed with many paths and fairly flat throughout. Nothing for racing bikes... 🤣
