The Plate Tower was built in 1401–1410 between two older and more venerable towers – Ropehill and Epping Towers, and named after the tower chief Herbord Plate.
It is disputed whether the tower has a horseshoe-shaped cross-section, typical of Tallinn's towers, or whether it can be described as almost circular.
For a long time the tower was in the hands of the military and stood empty, waiting for tenants. Sometimes, especially in summer, exhibitions are held on its first floor.
