The angel's greeting to the Mother of God begins with the words "Ave Maria, gratia plena" ("Hail Mary, full of grace"), when he brings the heavenly message to Mary, who lives in Nazareth and is betrothed to Joseph, that she is Jesus to give birth to Christ, the Son of God. The text has become a widespread prayer that believers address to Our Lady to invoke her intercession or to offer thanks.
