This castle is a typical tower house for the region, which was built in the 15th century. At that time it was used to protect the elongated estuary that separates Achill Island from the Corraun Peninsula. In the 16th century the building was one of the fortresses of the pirate queen Grace O'Malley (Gráinne Ni Mháille, also Granuaile).

Also known as Carrickkildavnet Castle, the tower house was the home of Ireland's 16th century Pirate Queen, Gráinne Ní Mháille (Grace O'Malley). The castle guards the strategic point of the mouth of the Achill Sound. You can cross the stile to explore the castle for free.
