This is an old Roman fortress. If you want to get very close to the Roman history of Leiden, you should definitely visit Archaeological Park Matilo. The park is named after the castellum that served as a defensive fortress here about 2000 years ago. The archaeological remains of this army camp, but also those of a medieval monastery, are still hidden in the soil. Above ground, the municipality of Leiden has made the history of this area visible with reconstructions of watchtowers and playground equipment for children in Roman style.
