    Heukelum Castle, originally called Merckenburg, is located just outside the historic fortified town of Heukelum on the border of Gelderland and South Holland. It was built shortly before 1286 by the van Arkel family. The castle, with its towers, courtyard, double moat and outer bailey, forms a particularly complete set of house, contents, archives and park. It is inhabited and not suitable for large groups of visitors. In the basement there is a small museum with rare coins, medieval finds and an extensive archive, which can be viewed by email on request.
