In the 11th century a canonical monastery was founded in Wetter. As is often the case around Marburg, the Archdiocese of Mainz and the Hessian landgraves fought over this monastery.
The collegiate church, a hall building, was built in the 13th Century. The tower was only built in the 15th century and was the tallest tower in Hesse at the time, but was later shortened due to the risk of collapse, but now still has an impressive height of over 60 m.
