The city is a good starting point for other attractions in northern Iceland, such as the waterfalls Aldeyjarfoss and Goðafoss and Lake Mývatn with its volcanic phenomena and Húsavík for whale watching.
Akureyri is only about 50 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle.
The church, which was inaugurated in 1940, is worth a visit.
