For the monumental staircase in the Abschlaggraben there was initially a wooden pedestrian bridge, which connected the weir island with the northern part of the Reisigwehrinsel until the Second World War. The remains of the former concrete bridge foundations are somewhat overgrown, but can still be seen on the embankment. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the East German Rose Garden, the idea came up to reconstruct this bridge and thus be able to offer a more varied route over the Reisigwehrinsel.
