Walenhoek is a 60 hectare nature reserve. In the last century, clay mining was done here until the late 1970s.
The name Walenhoek refers to the disappeared farm 'Waelenhoef', where Walloon mercenaries lived in the 16th century who served the Spanish king Philip II.
