The place was first mentioned in 953 as “Rossadal”.[10] The place name is derived from a field name of the same name, the defining word of which is the Old High German “ros, hros” (= horse) and therefore means “valley of the horses”.[11] The place name can also be interpreted as a “horse breeding site”.[12] According to the German dictionary (DWB, Der Grimm), the term horse stable is understood to mean the residence and sleeping place of the horse boys and other lower servants as well as an unsightly place.[13]
