Vandring
The Semmering Railway is a section of the Southern Railway in Austria. It runs from Gloggnitz over the Semmering to Mürzzuschlag. It was the first standard gauge mountain railway in Europe, was planned by Carl von Ghega and opened in 1854. Track and locomotive construction of the Semmeringbahn are considered milestones in railway history. Since 1998 it belongs to the UNESCO world cultural heritage

Vandring
A must for all railway enthusiasts. The route can be driven as a day tour from Vienna. Best on the way to Mürzzuschlag, there to the railway museum and to visit the construction site view of the new tunnel. Then back to Semmering by train and then hike a bit along the Bahnwanderweg.

Very good starting point for a circular hike in combination with the "Bahnwanderweg" or return by train.
From Semmering train station, the path leads along the track, past lookout points with great panoramic views of the interesting part of the entire structure to the train station Breitenstein (9 km), Klamm (15 km), Payerbach (21 km) or Gloggnitz (23 km). Every hiker can put together their own route and return from one of the train stations by train to the starting point.
