The ancient Via Claudia Augusta was built by the Roman Emperor Claudio in the first century AD, it connected the Latin world of northern Italy with the Germanic one of the Danube area.
Today the Via Claudia Augusta lives again as a cycling route that, starting from Venice or Verona and crossing Austria, leads after 655 kilometers to the German city of Donauwoerth on the Danube.
The crossing of the Alps takes place at Resia Pass at about 1400 m altitude
