The name of the Katzenturm is probably related to the appointment of Count von Katzenelnbogen as noble citizen of the city of Oberwesel, who owned a courtyard near the tower.

In the 1860s, the Oberwesel town council sold several towers. The Katzenturm was sold to the French ambassador in Berlin (Count de Reiset) in 1862 for 26 thalers. He also bought the area of the town wall 21.60 metres above and 10.80 metres below the tower. He converted the tower to create living quarters, which are still in use today. On the south side of the tower, you can also see a brick extension that forms a terrace. This continued until the railway embankment was broken through.
