    About this location
Around the year 1270, the Catharina Church of Zoutelande was founded from the then neighboring village of Werendijke. The current church tower probably dates from that time. The current church building was built in the 14th century, but was then almost twice as long and ended in a three-part choir. At the level of the current vestry there was a transept so that the whole was a so-called 'cross church'. The transepts were probably demolished in the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), when the village and the church had fallen into considerable disrepair.
