We cycled the canal to get from the Rhine to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Because the Ruhr area is gray. We were taught otherwise. Lots of nature with beautiful bike paths.

Built 1906 - 1914 in the once swampy Emschertal, partly using the old river bed. The Emscher was artificially laid back then and today runs directly parallel to the canal for long stretches. The RHK overcomes a height difference of around 36 m over a length of 45 km in 7 canal steps. Two channel levels have been eliminated over the years. 1980 in Essen-Dellwig as a result of mining-related water levels lowering and 1991 in Herne-West due to the expansion of the canal.

Wonderful bike path. It also goes past the Gasometer Oberhausen.
