    Almádena fort is a ruin dating from the 16th century. It was built to protect the fishermen from the pirates that plagued the area. Today, the fort is open to the public and offers a lovely view of the coast.

    The Forte de Almádena aka Forte da Boca do Rio, located between Salema and Burgau, was constructed in 1632. Damaged by the 1755 earthquake, it was abandoned in 1849. Its function was to protect the local tuna fishery against privateers and pirates. Constructed on a cliff 78 m. above sea level, it included two ramparts, a moat with a drawbridge, two batteries, barracks and a chapel. It is presently in poor condition.
