Vandring

The Ludwig Erhard Haus - named after the father of the social market economy and the German economic miracle - is the communications and service center of Berlin's economy. A total of 15 elliptical arches, almost 40 meters high and a good 60 meters wide, form the basic structure of the building. The high-swinging steel arches, the paw-like supports and the "scaly" façade should, according to the team of architects, recreate an armadillo.

The imposing building was designed and built by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners from 1994-98. The nine floors were suspended from fifteen steel box girder arches up to 38.6 m high, so that the inside of the ground floor has no supports. Two large atriums thus also illuminate all rooms from the inside. Seen from the air, the shape of the building is actually reminiscent of an armadillo, which the architects wanted. Definitely one of the more interesting buildings of a newer design. I like it...

A number of institutions of the Berlin economy have their headquarters in the Ludwig-Erhard-Haus, including the IHK Berlin, the capital marketing and business development company Berlin, the Association of Berlin Merchants and Industrialists and the Berlin Stock Exchange.

In 2018, the IHK Berlin bought the Ludwig-Erhard-Haus for 26.5 million euros from the real estate fund and is now the sole owner.
