The Church of San Giovanni Battista, is the destination of a fair number of tourists during the year, given its antiquity and the majestic panorama that can be enjoyed outside the church, from which you can see, on clear days, Corsica, the Tyrrhenian coast up to Livorno, the islands of Gorgona and Capraia as well as the Gulf of La Spezia, part of the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, part of the Alta Val di Vara and a large part of the Val di Magra.

Crossing the beautiful village of Beverone you go up to the church perched on the mountain. The 360 degree panorama from here is breathtaking, the gaze is lost between the AV ridges of the Ligurian Mountains, AV 5 Terre, Monte Gottero, the Apuan Alps to the sea. One of the most suggestive points of the whole Val di Vara!

Beverone is a beautiful place to stop for a break. Firstly, there is a bike station where e-bikes can recharge their battery. Secondly, a few meters from the bike station, there is a beautiful fountain. Finally, going up from the bike station towards the Church, you will find picnic tables with a fabulous view of the valley and, at the bottom, of the sea. It is also certainly worth climbing the hill to visit the Church, of which I was particularly impressed, in addition to the admirable position, by the beautiful bronze portal.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

How challenging is the hike to the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato viewpoint?

The ascent to the viewpoint is described as steep and challenging. While the exact distance from Beverone village isn't long, the elevation gain to reach the church at 747 meters above sea level makes it a demanding walk. Hikers should be prepared for a good workout, but the panoramic reward is widely considered worth the effort.

Are there any specific hiking trails recommended to reach the viewpoint?

The primary route involves crossing the charming village of Beverone and then ascending directly to the church. While there isn't a single named 'trail' in the traditional sense from the village, the path is well-trodden. For those looking for longer excursions, the viewpoint serves as an excellent destination within the broader network of trails in the Val di Vara and Ligurian Mountains, connecting to routes like the AV ridges and AV 5 Terre.

Is the viewpoint and its surrounding trails suitable for families with children or beginners?

Due to the steep and challenging ascent, the direct path to the church might be difficult for very young children or those unaccustomed to hiking. However, the village of Beverone itself offers amenities like picnic tables with views, which can be a pleasant stop for families. For beginners, it's advisable to assess your fitness level and wear appropriate footwear. There might be easier, flatter sections within the Val di Vara for a more relaxed family outing, but the direct climb to the church is more strenuous.

Can I bring my dog on the trails leading to the viewpoint?

Generally, trails in this region are dog-friendly, and there are no specific restrictions mentioned for the path to the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato. However, given the steep terrain, ensure your dog is fit enough for the climb. Always keep your dog under control, especially around other hikers, and carry water for both yourself and your pet.

Where can I park when visiting the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato viewpoint?

There is no specific parking directly at the church due to its elevated and detached position. Visitors typically park in the village of Beverone. The village offers convenient spots, and it's a good starting point for the walk up to the viewpoint. Arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak season, is advisable to secure a parking spot.

Are there any public transport options to reach Beverone or the viewpoint?

Reaching Beverone, a small village in the municipality of Rocchetta di Vara, primarily relies on private transport. Public transport options in this rural area are limited. It's recommended to check local bus schedules if available, but driving or cycling to Beverone is generally the most practical way to access the starting point for the viewpoint hike.

What are the best weather conditions for visiting the viewpoint to ensure clear views?

The most rewarding visits occur on clear days. The extensive panorama, which includes the Ligurian coast, Apuan Alps, and even distant islands like Corsica and Gorgona, is highly dependent on visibility. Overcast or hazy conditions can significantly obscure the distant views. Checking the local weather forecast for clear skies is highly recommended before your visit.

What should I wear for the walk to the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato viewpoint?

Given the steep and challenging terrain, appropriate footwear is crucial. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip are highly recommended. Dress in layers, as the weather can change, especially at higher elevations. Even on sunny days, a windbreaker can be useful at the exposed viewpoint. Don't forget sun protection and plenty of water.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near Beverone or the viewpoint?

The village of Beverone itself is small but offers some basic amenities. There are picnic tables with fabulous views near the church, perfect for enjoying your own packed lunch. For cafes, restaurants, or accommodation, you would likely need to look in larger nearby towns within the Val di Vara or Rocchetta di Vara municipality. It's always a good idea to check in advance for opening hours, especially in smaller villages.

What other viewpoints are nearby that offer similar panoramic experiences?

The Val di Vara region is rich with elevated positions offering stunning views. While the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato is unique for its 360-degree sweep, other viewpoints along the AV ridges of the Ligurian Mountains or within the Alta Val di Vara can provide different perspectives of the Apuan Alps, the Ligurian coast, and the surrounding valleys. Exploring hiking routes in the broader Rocchetta di Vara area will reveal many such scenic spots.

Is there a circular walking route that includes the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Decollato viewpoint?

While the direct path from Beverone to the church is an out-and-back ascent, many hikers integrate the viewpoint into longer circular routes within the Val di Vara. These routes often connect various villages, historical sites, and other scenic points. You can explore available hiking maps or online route planners to find circular options that suit your desired distance and difficulty, often utilizing the network of trails that crisscross the Ligurian Mountains.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter in the Beverone area?

The Val di Vara region, with its chestnut and pine forests, is home to diverse wildlife. Hikers might spot various bird species, including birds of prey soaring above the valleys. Mammals such as wild boar, deer, and foxes are present, though often shy and more active during dawn or dusk. The rich biodiversity of the Ligurian Apennines makes any walk an opportunity for nature observation.
