The park was built in 1825 by Peter Josef Lenné on the site of the destroyed monastery "mountains" and originally had the threefold extent of today's area.
At the edge of the park is a building designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Gesellschaftshaus.
From the end of the 19th century, a botanical garden originated in the Gruson greenhouses. There you can visit exotic plants.
