Since 1978, Zieroldsplatz has been the backdrop for a memorial that was erected to mark the 400th year of Don Juan d’Austria's death (1547–1578). His mother was Barbara Blomberg from Regensburg, his father, Emperor Karl V. Don Juan, won a decisive battle against the then pirating Turkish naval power with the so-called "Holy League", a large fleet of ships equipped by Spain, Venice and the Papal States.
