What makes this fort special are the cellars under both throat casemates, which served for the storage of meat. The meat was transported to the fort via the North Sea Canal and then taken to other forts. After the Second World War until the 1980s, the fort served as a warehouse for explosives for the Dutch army.

The fort has now been transformed into 'Cheese Fort Amsterdam', including a visitor center.

In the course of 2019, Burgundian Lifestyle will move into Fort Zuidwijkermeer after a major restoration. A cheese paradise matured, processed and stored in the fortress itself. In the fort there will also be a space for volunteers from Landscape Noord-Holland who will take care of the green maintenance and there will be guided tours. The green side of the fort remains a nature reserve.
