The church was the first Romanesque church in Alsace and dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. The portal from the 11th century is famous for its medallions. The church is surrounded by the cemetery and on one side by the border river Lauter.

The church has its origins in the 11th century. Not much has changed in the building since the 12th century. You dive into another world. The organ played when I visited. It was wonderful.
The history of the village is also part of its history: In the Middle Ages Altenstadt belonged to the lands of the Weissenburg Monastery. Before the French Revolution, Altenstadt and Schweighofen belonged together. When the border was drawn in the Second Peace of Paris in 1815, it belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria. Altenstadt is French from 1825 and was incorporated into Wissembourg in 1975.

This Romanesque basilica is still very well preserved and worth seeing.
