Here, a wooden cross commemorates the crash of an American B-17 bomber, also known as the Flying Fortress, on February 22, 1944.
The B-17, on its way from the English airfield Thurleighauf to Gotha, was shot down by German fighters.
Of the 10 crew members survived only the 20-year gunner Bill Huddelston (Texas), who could save himself with his parachute.
