The water levels in Stade are regulated via three locks at the Salztor, at the old port at the fish market or at the Backeltrog/Schiffertor, at low and high tide as well as from the incoming rainwater from the hinterland of the Stader Geest. Without these sluices, there would be wet feet or full cellars in the old town. The lock times of the Salztorschleuse – Stade depend on the tide. From 1875 to 1925, the Salztor lock served as a flushing lock.
