The church is a towerless, single-nave stone building, which was built in 1201 near the battlefield of Stellau by the knights of Krummendiek. The free-standing belfry with a boarded-up case dates from 1851.

The church of Stellau is located in a district of Wrist in the lowlands of Stör and Bramau. It is a towerless, single-nave stone building. The field stones are walled up with plaster from the Kalkberg in Segeberg. Stylistically, the building shows both Romanesque elements (the arched windows) and Gothic (the rounded choir arch). The ensemble also includes the old thatched pastorate from 1706, the new classicist pastorate from 1858 and a free-standing bell cage with a boarded case from 1851.
