In 2001, the Veltins Arena replaced the neighboring Parkstadion as the home ground of FC Schalke 04. This modern stadium with a retractable roof not only hosts sporting competitions, but also international music concerts. It is one of the most visited stadiums in Germany.

The Veltins-Arena (2001-2005 Arena AufSchalke) in Gelsenkirchen is the stadium of the Bundesliga soccer club FC Schalke 04. It was completed in August 2001 after almost three years of construction. The arena holds 62,271 spectators for football matches at national level. The Veltins-Arena is located in the geographical center of Gelsenkirchen. The roof extends over the entire stadium. The part above the playing field can be opened. When playing in the Bundesliga, the roof is usually open - except when there is snow or heavy rain.
