Here are still a few foundations of the former NATO radar station Langanes. The facility was built in 1951 and was one of four radar sites installed on the corners of Iceland. With these systems, the airspace in this strategically important area could be monitored.
During a severe winter storm in January 1961, the station was badly damaged. The radomes (protective covers of the radar antennas) were damaged and the antennas were inoperable. The operation of the radar station was then discontinued and the staff relocated to Hofn.
