there were many more victims at the Berlin Wall who only wanted to go to the "other side". Here at this point a memorial of the first victim Günter Litfin (24 years old)

Günter Litfin (1937-1961) was the first East German refugee to be killed by targeted gunfire by East German border guards after the construction of the Berlin Wall. Litfin's shooting caused a great stir among the Berlin public. While the West Berlin press echoed the outrage, "Neues Deutschland," the central organ of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and the chief propagandist of East German television, Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler, vilified Litfin as a homosexual offender, a "criminal figure," and a "dark element."
