The zoo, which opened in 1959, currently keeps 300 animals of 71 species and breeds. Particular attractions are the "Flamingoland" completed in 2013 and the "Pinguinland" opened in 2016, two modern, walk-in, cross-netted facilities for South American swamp and waterfowl and South American shorebirds. In "Penguinland" commented feedings take place twice (approx. 10.00 a.m. and approx. 3.00 p.m.). A playground and petting zoo as well as the small Indian village offer the children a welcome change and guarantee a relaxing and interesting stay. Once a year, a children's festival takes place in the America Zoo.
